Cakewalk London

A great app to help explore some of London's many cake shops.  Has over 300 listings and directs you there with google maps.  One great feature is that is tells you in real time what shops are open now with a green pin on the map or closed with a red pin.  Whereever you are turn on Cakewalk London and fine a great cafe with cake and so much more.

Holidayen - Fully automatic travel itinerary planner for London. Also on web

Free Beer App - Awesome App! Gives you a Free Beer in London everyday when you buy any drink or main meal. Only 12 central London venues at the moment, but it is definatly worth a download! Im a big fan! Apple or Android - Free Beer. www.ilovefreebeer.com 

James Bond and Friends -  Your mission, should you choose to accept it... is to use this App to locate the real life locations where famous scenes from your favourite SPY/THRILLER movies have been shot in London. Next London Bus or London Bus Stop - live bus arrival times for all 20,000 bus stops in London including a handy alarm which tells you when to leave your hotel or house in time to catch your bus. 

Walkin London - this lists Attractions by walking distance and has downloadable maps so it's really handy for seeing what's nearby.

London Tube - this app is free, and it does have a way of checking for problems, but it goes online for that - not so good if you pay for roaming.

London Underground

Excellent journey planning app. Tells you about the status of the Underground, Overground and DLR lines. It can tell you the estimated journey time between any two stations you select on the tube map. And features extremely useful 'Departure Boards' so you can see when the next train is due at any station within the network. Great for when you don't want to miss the last service or want to commute from your London accommodation.

Bus Countdown

If you take the bus more frequently then the tube then this app if for you. Key in your bus number, choose your bus stop and it will tell you the live schedule of the next arrivals at the bus stop. It continuously updates itself and also tells you the location of the bus you are expecting and its registration number.

Top Table
(OPENTABLE)

If you want to taste your way around London then this app is something you may want to download right away. It features almost all the restaurants in the city and lets you search by name, location or postcode. It also has plenty of customer reviews, special offers, some up to 50% off and the ability to quickly book a table without any fuss. The main website is very popular and the easy smartphone app version is a great extension of it. You can even save your favourites and view all your existing bookings.

Time Out London

Time Out London magazine is now available for free (if you manage to get your hands on one before they run out) but the app version is also a pretty handy little guide. There is the “Most Popular in London” suggestions which you can scroll across on the top. Then there is the “Top 10” shortlists which makes it easy to pick out the must-see and must-dos around the capital. The daily offers and discounts are pretty good value and sometime unmissable with a mix of events, attractions, dining, beauty and London experiences. And if you are still stumped on what to do, there is the wild card “Inspire” section which randomly selects something you may find interesting.

This is a great app to learn about events and attractions in London. You can also view the London Map and pinpoint 'What's On' around the city or near your neighbourhood. It also gives you a list of 'What's Free' and lets you select and save your favourite things to see and do.

Riverside London App

Experience the entertainment and culture of London's Thameside through this app with all the latest listings, discounts, events and maps. But it only covers the South side of the river from the South Bank to Tower Bridge.  There's a snazzy 'Reality View' that shows you what's on around you as you hold up your camera phone and face it at the surrounding buildings.

London City Guide

No.1 choice with its comprehensive array of restaurants, attractions, venues, shops, tours and activities. All of which can be booked, reviewed, checked-in and saved to your favourites for later. You can even reserve a table at a highly-rated restaurant at the last minute. There is a handy section to find nearby ATMs. There are free self-guided tours which are quite informative and entertaining offering a great resource to learn and discover the city without the help of a local friend or tour guide. The 'Trip Journal' section records your trip and activities when you check-in in at locations.

Cities Talking

Go Local - a great new app on the iPhone that gives you the ability to quickly and easily find out all the promotions being run by local businesses, wherever you are across London.  Things like happy hours, quiz nights, set menu and pre theatre dinner specials, lunch specials and the like.  Links through to Yelp reviews if you want to find out more.  Let's you make the most of the local businesses and stretch your money further.

WalkAppBout - this is a great app that takes you on a walk into some corners of the City that you'd never notice and tells you all about the history. Fascinating stories that I'd never heard about before. Great for a weekend walk or a day out.  Click here to download....

Pocket London Free - This free guide does not need an internet connection, has a pretty good map and some nice features like quiz questions. Easy to use and covers all the main tourist places in central London.

Green & Rural London - great guide to London's secret gardens, parks, farms and other such places

Tube Status - up to date info on Tube service and any scheduled weekend closures

London Tube - good app for moving around London via the Tube. There's also an app available for London Bus routes by the same company

London2Go - pretty decent map app. There's also some high level tourist info that might be of some use to the first time visitor

TheFashionPixie.com - great free shopping app that details all of London's fashion sales and biggest store discounts

Quirky London - name says it all. A listing, limited gallery and map reference for some of the more unusual places to see in London.

Drync Wine - not specific to London, but a fun app to use when selecting your tipple.

Free & Budget London - comprehensive and beautifully illustrated guide to free and budget things to do and see in London

Superlative London - another guide from the same (Sutro Media) stable as  Quirky London and Free & Budget London, similarly professionally produced with masses of pictures and at a massive 275 entries of London's best , greatest, oldest, only etc.. good value.

It could be very useful to set up a listing of pubs, wine bars and restaurants in iTouch Notes with the address of each location. If you have access to Wifi, you can click on the address listing and a map will pop up to help you on your way. 

Cass Presents: Tony Cragg at Exhibition Road - Fantastic free app that guides you through the new sculpture exhibition, into the V&A, Science Museum, Natural History Museum, and Exhibition Road. You are able to choose your pace as you visit each work: 'Fun and fast' or 'In-depth and immersive', or simply scan the QR code on each work to learn about each individual piece. Smith Finder - this is a really useful pub-finder app for Samuel Smith pubs in London. Samuel Smith have some of the oldest and most interesting pubs in the capital. They are very traditional, often with quirky and historic features. Many have dartboards, open fires, private booths, as well as some of the cheapest beer around. This app is great for both tourists looking for a typical olde worlde pub and for seasoned London pub goers looking for a good pub close by. http://bit.ly/TxB5ki

Citymapper: London - a must-have transportation app for London that works beautifully. Tap it's "Get Somewhere" tab, type in or select from a map origin and destination, and you're offered a choice of routes by walking, bus, tube, or car. The directions and maps are superlative, allowing those with no prior knowledge to use not only the tube system, which is quite clearly organized and understandable, but also London buses, whose routes can be a challenge for foreign visitors. Truly superb. 

BusLondonPro - a very handy app that will not only show nearby bus stops and their routes, but also provide updates as to when the next bus arrives as well as information about any current re-routings or delays, closures, etc. Together with Citymapper this is indispensable for getting around easily on London mass transit.
