York's local public transportation system links the city centre with the surrounding suburbs. Route maps and timetables can be found here. Most city bus routes operate on at least a half-hourly basis, with the more popular routes running at 10-minute intervals. Traffic conditions sometimes render the timetables somewhat redundant, especially during the morning and evening rush hours and on a Saturday, so be sure to allow plenty of extra time for your journey if travelling at those times. A lot of bus stops now have live real-time message boards showing how long to the next few buses arriving which helps a little.

Buses also run to most surrounding towns. For bus links to Leeds, Flamingoland, Whitby and Scarborough see www.yorkshirecoastliner.co.uk

On Summer Sundays and Bank Holidays the DalesBus service provides links to Fountains Abbey (a World Heritage Site) and the Yorkshire Dales National Park - see www.dalesbus.org

For all bus times see www.yorkshiretravel.net

There are five Park & Ride locations situated at convenient locations around York. A sixth is planned for the A59 route near Poppleton. These offer plenty of safe, free parking and the buses are very regular (Askham Bar can get full on weekdays).  The buses drop off/pick up in a very central part of town and are all identified by a particular colour.  Children travel free with adults.  Daily ticket prices for adults are £2 single,60p pensioners pass and £2.60 return.  Weekly, monthly and annual tickets are also available. Note only the Red line picks up or sets down en route at intermediate stops. If you plan to stay late, note that Park and ride services generally stop at 8pm (6pm on Sunday) and overnight parking is generally not allowed, with the grounds being locked up!
