A favourite activity of Oxononians in the warmer months is walking along Port Meadow. Start by taking a taxi or the #6 bus north to the last stop in Wolvercote and walking up the road a short distance to the famous Trout restaurant. Continue past the Trout and over the bridge, and immediately turn left onto the Thames river foot path. First you'll see ruins of a 12th century nunnery. Continue along the canal and you'll pass Godstow lock. There's a turn off to another pub, the Perch, for those who like to do the Trout --> Perch walk. Otherwise, continue along the canal until you reach the boat houses, and then cross over and make your way across the meadow to end up in Jericho. Port Meadow is 440 acres, and takes about an hour to stroll through.
Another popular canal walk is from Folly Bridge to the Isis Tavern. From the city centre, walk south on St. Aldates until you reach Folly Bridge, with the Head of the River Pub on your left. Cross over the bridge and immediately turn left onto the Thames River foot path. Stroll past the college boat houses and you'll come to the Isis Tavern after about a 30 minute walk. This walk is very flat and easy - perfect for walking to Sunday lunch.
