Castleton
Consider visiting the nearby town of Castleton to check out its stunning natural caverns. It's about half an hour's drive west of Sheffield. The following sights should give you a good taste of what is to be found in Castleton
The name of this place refers to a kind of rock that is mined there. Blue John is a "unique fluor spar" found only in Castleton. It has been mined at the site for centuries, beginning with the Romans 2,000 years ago. Tours of the cavern are available. They last between 45 minutes to one hour, and takes you through various natural caverns. Admission is 7 pounds for adults, 3.50 pounds for children between 5 and 15, and 5 pounds for students. Children under 5 get in free. The cavern is open every day except Christmas from 9:30 am to 5:30 pm or dusk.
Known familiarly as the "Devil's Arse," this cavern boasts the largest cave entrance in all of Britain. Inside you will find the remains of an ancient community, as well as spectacular natural rock formations. Guided tours are available, last one hour, and include demonstrations on traditional rope making. Admission is 6.25 pounds for adults, 4.25 pounds for children 5-15. Children under 5 get in free. Open every day except Christmas.
