The West End has developed an established reputation for being the center of Cardiff’s active weekend nightlife. This area includes St. Mary Street, Mill Lane (/the Café Quarter), and the Brewery Quarter. Between these three, you can find whatever you like in terms of drinking, dancing, gambling, eating, and socializing. Here are a couple of choices in the West End District if you are looking to go out at night while in Cardiff:

  • Walkabout is supremely popular with sports fans because of its enormous television. But it is versatile for its popularity with other groups as well: students flock, especially on Thursdays for “bounce” student night, and businesspeople and 9-5ers all over the city come to enjoy its comfy lounge atmosphere as an after-work hangout. St. Mary Street.
  • The Gala Casino is noted for its modern, hip feel. Sign up to be a member of Gala 24 hours in advance – it’s free. Mary Ann Street, 029-2064-3400.
  • The nightclub K2 has something for everyone – literally! There is a lower-level “fantasy lounge” that features pole and lap dancing and the like. Upstairs there is a tame main bar that gets big crowds stopping in before they begin their clubbing. Finally, there are salsa dancing classes on Tuesday nights (for a small price). St. Mary Street. If you want to learn.
  • Bar Emporium is a happening joint for students and the younger crowd in the area. Serving as a pub and a club, this place is a throbbing dance spot that heats up as the evening wears on. St. Mary Street.
  • Great Western is noted for its mood-setting lit candles at night. Drinks here are relatively inexpensive, so it’s a crowded weekend spot. Dancing gets started at night, so stick around after your drinks to shake it on the dance floor. St. Mary Street.
  • A hip, cozy (for some it’s too cozy) bar, Lava Lounge also opens up a dance floor at night. The drinks are pricey, here, but some think that a night in this basement of the old Brains Brewery is well worth the price...decide for yourself. Brewery Quarter.
