To know about the spirit of Derry, perhaps it is a good idea to explore the Irish's struggles overseas as they escaped famine and religious persecution in the 19th century. Some books that you may read are:

- Kerby Miller’s Emigrants and Exiles: Ireland and the Irish Exodus to North America. Miller takes first person accounts such as diaries, journals, letters and memoirs to give an account of the Irish odissey across the Atlantic Ocean to get to United States.

- Irish struggle to be part of the country that received them and their success in different fields is also presented in this other book by Miller: Journey of Hope: The Story of Irish Immigration to America. A very interesting feature of this book is that the actual letters and documents are included so that the reader can have direct access to the sources and complete the picture by himself.

- The American Irish: A History by Kevin Kenny. Kenny explores how Irish migration impacted not only in America but also in modern Ireland. He analyses the migration flows during the last four centuries, and he concentrates on the period going from 1820 to 1920 tracing its causes in Ireland and its consequences in the United States.

- Oceans of Consolation: Personal Accounts of Irish Migration to Australia by David Fitzpatrick. The author recollects about 100 letters from 14 families who migrated to Australia to tell the story of migration. He includes photographs and a chapter with bibliographical sources about Irish-Australian migration.

- Hasia Diner in Erin's Daughters in America: Irish Immigrant Women in the Nineteenth Century tells the story of Irish migration from the point of view of women.
