Winner of the Daily Record Hot Plate award in April 2007 - The Jefferson Restaurant in Grange Street is excellent, with modern stylish decor and friendly staff, the food is good and reasonably priced, but perhaps not quite as good as Merchants in Queen Street, where the food is of a very high quality. Don't be put off by the location - at the back of M&S looking out onto a car park.
Blues Restaurant in the Park Hotel is also very good.
There are several Chinese Restaurants in the town centre - all of them reasonably good.
Shimla Palace in Titchfield Street is a decent Indian restaurant and offers a great value for money buffet.
For Coffee Shops, there are several - the Coffee Club and Mamitas, both in Bank Street are recommended. Flavours Deli in Bank Street is also good. M & S also has a small cafe.
For pub grub in the town centre, you could try The Treehouse, Paris Match, Brass and Granite, The Portmann, First Edition and September 31. September 31 has an outdoor eating area at the back with a small enclosed kids play area adjacent to it which is great if you have small children with you. The children's menu there is very good too, no rubbish!
Fot pub grub slightly out of town, both the King's Arms (Fenwick) and the Cochrane Inn (Gatehead) are great traditional pubs serving good food. The King's Arms probably has the edge for atmosphere and friendly staff but the food at the Cochrane is slightly more upmarket. It is part of the Costley Hotel chain.
