The area between Aveimore and Cairngorm mountain base, incorporating the forrests and lochs of Rothiemurchus and Glenmore estates is one of the most beautiful parts of the UK.  Aviemore itself is a bustling town at all times of th year and has much to offer the visitor, whether it is skiing in the winter, walking, hiking, cycling or sailing in the summer, there is something for everyone in the most beautiful and spectacular setting.  no matter what the weather, the views both of and from Cairngorm and the surrounding mountains is stunning and constantly changing depending on the weather and the season.

A trip up the funicular mountain railway is a must and although often covered with cloud, this can change within minutes to provide fantastic views of nearly the whole of the north and west of Scotland, towards the Moray coast in the north and Ben Nevis in the west. there is an adequate canteen style restaurant, bar, gift shop and viewing terrace at the top station and you can sit sipping hot chocolate while looking out the large windows towards loch Morlich. Tickets may seem a bit pricey, but are worth every penny - tip - if visiting out of the winter season, and paying for a family ticket, it may be worth considering a "freinds of cairngorm mountain" family pass which entitles you to as many trips in the funicular as you can manage in a year, excluding snowsports use, 10% additional tickets and also disount in the shops there.

During snowsports season the mountain offers a reasonable ski area -  if you are used to skiing in Europe or USA, don't get too excited or expect too much - it is Scotland after all.  Runs are pretty narrow and short and you often have to play dodge the rocks and fences but if you are desperate to get your skis on - it is perfectly adequate and with good snow cover like just now (best in years ) great fun for a day on the slopes.  it can get extremely busy at weekends and during holiday season so be prepared for long queues for the lifts.

Whatever your reason for going, you are sure to love what Aviemore and the surrounding countryside has to offer. Hotel preference is Hilton Coylumbridge - was not too impressed with the MacDonald resort hotels, althought there is a nice shopping centre there.  Old Bridge Inn great for drink, sit outside in summer and enjoy fire in the winter. Roos Leap is thoroughly recommended for food but be sure to book as it gets quite busy. Smithy's is a great fish and chip shop on the main street and the mountian cafe is a lovely place to go for coffee and cake.
