Why not pick periwinkles along the South West coast of Donegal.
Breathe in the fresh salt sea air blowing in from the Atlantic while you engage in the century old tradition of periwinkle picking. Periwinkles, also known as whelks, are found on the rocks and under seaweed.
Periwinkles are considered a delicacy in Asian and French cuisine. The meat is low in fat and high in protein. When picked they should be stored in a cold place for a maximum of one week. They are to be boiled in hot water for approximately 10 minutes. When boiled, they can be removed from their shell by using a pin or similar, and eaten immediately.
One such place to engage in this activity is at the strand at Inver, Co. Donegal. Not only can you pick periwinkles, but you can view beautiful scenery while doing so.
