Being in Ireland, Kilkenny is not immune to the rainy day here and there so what better to do than take the opportunity to see some real crafts! Nicholas Mosse Pottery was established by Nicholas Mosse in Bennettsbridge 1976. Using the inspiration of the quiet rural surroundings, the pottery was decorated by hand with a wide range of natural forms and patterns. From these small beginnings the business has evolved into being one of Ireland's best known and most popular potteries...and well worth a visit.
Bennettsbridge is a friendly little crafts village with several different crafts workshops (e.g. candles, glass blowing etc.) about 5 miles out of the city and accessible by bus which departs from outside the castle around 11am and returning about 3pm. (This happens to be the New Ross route so times may have changed by now!) The bus costs 3 euros, a taxi will cost you around 15 euros.
Although some pieces at Nicholas Mosse may be expensive there are also seconds that only a trained craftsman would notice any flaw in. Even if you're not there to buy it is well worth a visit to see some beautiful hand painted pieces of craft and you also have the opportunity to watch a gifted potter at work, well worth a visit.
