Sligo is one of the live music capitals of Ireland. Great musicians and artists have gravitated to this area from Ireland and abroad for some time. Past and present residents include members of Westlife, singer-songwriter Kieran Goss, successful traditional band Dervish, Steve Wickham of the Waterboys & his band NoCrows, and recording artist Perry Blake to name but a few. Sligo is the musical hub of the northwest with lots of quality free music on offer in local establishments.

There's a new listings site for music in Sligo called that attempts to be a one-stop shop for all music gig listings in the county, from pub gigs to formal concerts. It's a free site that anyone can send listings too, but as it's so regularly updated it's a good one for travellers to check in on too.

From Tabby to Oddsox Revival to Anything Goes, there is a lot of talent to be found in Sligo's pubs. Regular free gigs take place in McGarrigles, Hargadons, Furey's, McHugh's, to name but a few. Notable residencies:

  • Anything Goes, every Friday in Hargadons, 10pm - Sligo's hottest regular live music session, more often than not featuring the amazing, show-stopping vocals of Sinead Conway. Anything Goes has become one of Sligo's most in-demand acts - a most entertaining party band with huge variety in its rock/soul/jazz repertoire, even a bit of rap and Riverdance thrown in. Dont be put off by the crowd at the door, there is usually plenty of room further in if you make the effort to squeeze through.
  • Sunday MASS (Massive Acoustic Sunday Session) in McGarrigles, 8pm till late. Always heaving with punters and local talent who come to jam. Regular spontaneous magic!
  • Sunday Jazz at the Harp Tavern: Sligo legends The Jazz Ladds play every sunday lunchtime in Sligo's longest running residency.
  • Tapas and Music - Thursdays at Source Sligo: Pianist Kieran Quinn performs duets with different weekly guest, 9-11 each Thursday.
  • Source Saturday Sessions, 10.30pm: A recent welcome addition to the Sligo music calendar, Source Sligo features different local and visiting acts (emphasis on jazz/world/contemporary) each Saturday in a sophisticated wine bar atmosphere.
  • Fureys: Live music various days of the week, see Furey's facebook page for details
  • Strand Bar, Strandhill: Live music every night throughout the summer and on weekends the rest of the year. Hang out with the surf dudes, have some drinks and drink in the quality atmosphere.

Weekly folk-trad sessions of note include Tuesdays and Wednesdays in Shoot the Crows, where the Wednesday night session has reached near-legendary status and features members of the folk-world music group NoCrows, sometime its the whole group. This is a group which grew from the very pub session which continues today, and has played some of Europe's biggest festivals including Glastonbury and Dranouter.

Trad sessions also take place in Furey's, Foleys and McGarrigles. Trad sessions add your sessions here!
