The Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg International Airport in France lies near the borders of Switzerland and Germany. As a result, the airport serves three border cities, one in each country. It is also one of the only airports in the world that is operated jointly by two countries, France and Switzerland, and curiously has three airport designations: BSL, MLH and EAP. It is therefore a good idea to check for all three airport codes when searching for tickets, as sometimes tickets to BSL are cheaper than to MLH, or vice versa.
The airport is the main hub for easyJet, an economy airline service that offers flights to many cities across Europe. Most major European airlines also have flights here from the major cities, including Air France (Lyon, Paris, Toulouse), Austrian Airlines (Vienna), British Airways (London), Lufthansa (Frankfurt, Munich), Swiss International (Amsterdam, Brussels, Zurich) and Turkish Airlines (Istanbul). Visitors from outside of Europe will have to transit at one of the cities listed above to get here via air.
Freiburg is also accessible by automobile. It is located fairly close to the major cities of Strasbourg (France), Stuttgart (Germany) and Zurich (Switzerland) via the B3, B31 or A5 autoways. Car rentals are also available from EuroAirport; the companies generally have two offices, one for the French wing of the airport and another for the Swiss. Major agencies such as Avis, Europcar, Hertz, National and Sixt are all represented.
