There are two main shopping areas in Augsburg – the city center area and the City Galerie. The inner city center area is where many tourists prefer to hang for their shopping needs.
In the city center area, you can peruse a variety of stores and pick up interesting items to take home – perhaps some interesting handcrafts or beer. During the week and on Saturdays, there’s also a large public market in the downtown area. Here, you can pick up local produce and meats, as well as other local specialties.
If you venture further out, you can visit the city Galerie, which is really a lot like the malls at home. Featuring a wide array of department stores, hair salons and eating establishments, this is where to go if you want to feel like you’re back at home, or if you want a German mall shopping experience.
There are a few things to remember when shopping in Augsburg. First, as in most German cities, most stores (and even many restaurants) are closed on Sundays. If you plan to go shopping on this day, be prepared for more than a few disappointments. In addition, be sure to carry cash and not expect to pay for everything with credit cards. Most stores in Germany do not accept credit cards, so bring cash.
