Christmas markets in Berlin in 2015

 

Here is a list of the most famous Christmas markets in Berlin. Most of the markets start on the day after the last Sunday before Advent, which is November 23rd in 2015 and last until Christmas. The given dates below are subject to change, check the market's particular website for details.

Mitte


Christmas Magic at Gendarmenmarkt

How to get there?

Leave underground lines U2 or U6 at station Stadtmitte.

When could you go?

November 23rd till December 31st

Admission: 1 €

What to expect?

A mixture of arts and crafts, on stage performances and delicacies.  The market is well situated in front of German and French cathedral and Schauspielhaus.

 

Winter World and Christmas market at Potsdamer Platz

How to get there?

Take underground line U2, S-Bahn lines S1, S2, S25 or regional trains to station Potsdamer Platz or go by bus 200, M41, M48, M85.

When could you go?

Christmas market: November 23h till December 26th

Winter World: November 1st till January 4th (closed on November 15th and 22nd)

What to expect?

Curling, ice skating and snow tubing. Live events during weekends. Yes, there is a Christmas market as well…

 

Christmas Time at Rotes Rathaus

How to get there?

Closest station is Alexanderplatz (underground lines U2, U5 and U8). S-Bahn lines S5, S7 and S75 and regional trains also stop here. Busses TXL, 100, 200, M48 and tram lines M4, M5, M6 stop at Spandauer Strasse/ Marienkirche next to the Christmas market.

When could you go?

November 23th till December 28th

What to expect?

You can either go ice skating around Neptune’s fountain or take a ride in the Ferris wheel or both in front of Berlin's city hall. The market stands are designed as old Berlin houses, which makes it very cosy. And it is very good for kids since it has pony riding and a petting zoo as well.

 

Christmas market at Opernpalais

How to get there?

Within walking distance of one kilometer are Alexanderplatz (underground lines U2, U5 and U8 and connections to regional trains) and Hackescher Markt stations (S-Bahn lines S5, S7 and S75, which also stop at Alexanderplatz). Busses TXL, 100 and 200 stop at Staatsoper, which is around the corner.

When could you go?

November 23th till December 26th (closed on December 24th)

What to expect?

If you are into roasted almonds or chestnuts this is the place to be. You will also get burnt punch here. The market is mostly about arts and crafts and is full of atmosphere.

 

Christmas market at Alexanderplatz

How to get there?

Very easy, leave at Alexanderplatz station (underground lines U2, U5 and U8, S-Bahn lines S5, S7 and S75 and regional trains). Busses TXL, 100, 200, M48 and tram lines M4, M5, M6 also have stops here.

When could you go?

From November 23th till December 27th

What to expect?

Since the market is located close to Galeria Kaufhof department store and Alexa shopping mall it is not very atmospheric, but if you are already shopping in the area…

 

Winter Dreams at Alexa

How to get there?

Leave the train, bus or tram at Alexanderplatz station and walk through Alexa shopping mall. The funfair is located between underground and S-Bahn stations Alexanderplatz and Jannowitzbruecke (U8, S5, S7, S75).

When could you go?

From November 23th till December 23rd

What to expect?

It is more a funfair with several merry-go-rounds than a Christmas market, but you will also get glogg and gingerbread there.

The market was very famous in former East Berlin.

 

Charlottenburg


Christmas market at Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church

How to get there?

Closest stations to Breitscheidplatz are Zoo station (underground lines U2, U9, S-Bahn lines S5, S7, S75 and regional trains, busses X9, 100, 200, M46) and Wittenbergplatz (underground lines U1, U2 and U3, bus M46). Busses M19, M29 and M46 have a stop at Europa-Center next to the market.

When could you go?

November 23th till January 3rd

What to expect?

You get everything from arts and crafts to rostbratwurst here, but nothing too special.

 

Christmas maket at Charlottenburg Palace

How to get there?

Either by underground line U2 (station Sophie-Charlotte-Platz) and a short walk along Schlossstrasse or take line U7 (station Richard-Wagner-Platz) and walk along Otto-Suhr-Allee. Busses M45 and 309 have a stop at Schloss Charlottenburg.

When could you go?

November 24th till December 28th (closed on December 24th)

What to expect?

A mixture of arts and crafts and delicacies. The market is well situated in front of Charlottenburg Palace, which will be illuminated. There will also be special tours through and events at the palace and its gardens. Very atmospheric.

 

Spandau


Spandau’s Christmas market

How to get there?

By underground line U7 (station Altstadt Spandau) or by bus X33 (stop Altstadt Spandau) or bus 130 (stop Breite Strasse/ Markt).

When could you go?

November 25th till December 23rd

What to expect?

Arts and crafts as well as delicacies in front of Spandau’s town hall. There is a special Christmas market for children within the setting as well.

 

Prenzlauer Berg


Lucia Christmas market in Kulturbrauerei

How to get there?

Underground line U2 takes you to station Eberswalder Strasse. From there it is a short walk along Danziger Strasse and Knaackstrasse or Schoenhauser Allee and Sredzkistrasse to the entrances of Kulturbrauerei, a former brewery.

When could you go?

November 23rd till December 21st

What to expect?

Since the market takes place within the building complex, it is very cosy and atmospheric. It is not very big, so do not expect too much. There are special cultural events as well.
