Dinner is served late in Berlin. Visitors can choose to line up with the locals and eat around 8pm, or take advantage of the calm before the culinary storm and have the choice of tables early.

Traditional German dishes, featuring sausages, heavy potato casseroles and sauerkraut appear on many menus, but many German restaurants also serve “New German” cuisine with an emphasis on healthy and fresh ingredients.

Berlin's best Italian restaurants:

Bar Tolucci Eisenacher Strasse 86, Schoeneberg, +49-30/214-1607 This cozy restaurant is on the corner of Eisenacher and Rosenheimer streets in Schoeneberg. Great antipasti, pasta dishes, seafood specials and pizza. Excellent choices of wines by the glass at reasonable prices. It used to have the best pastries and cakes, too, but alas they've limited the selection to a few good, but lonely, selections.

Die Zwolf Apostel (The 12th Apostle) Georgenstrasse 2,  10117 Berlin, www.12-apostel.de, Tel 030 201 0222, located near the Island Museum right by the SU Bahnhof Friedrichstrasse. This delightful Italian restaurant is right underneath the rail line but you can't hear anything underneath all that brickwork. It does have an outdoor patio but indoors it has several large cavernous rooms wonderfully decorated with ceiling murals, dark wood paneling, potted palms, etc.
