Hamburg, like most German cities, is a very runner-friendly place. There are large, beautiful parks spread over the city, elegant neighborhoods with tree-lined streets, and lots of waterfront paths along rivers and lakes. If you enjoy seeing a city by foot, you can't go wrong in Hamburg.
There are a lot of great routes available. Here are a few of the best:
1. Aussenalster loop: the Aussenalster lake is a park-lined jewel in the heart of the city, and is the most popular jogging route in town. The flat, 7.5km loop is beautiful any time of year, with lakeside vistas from every angle.
2. Planten en Blomen park run: One of Germany's most beautiful parks is found right in downtown Hamburg, Planten en Blomen (Plattdeutsch for "Plants and Flowers"). Combined with the Wallanlage park, which follows the old city moat down to the Elbe River, you can run for 6.4km through a varied park landscape.
3. Eppendorf/Stadtpark run: Stadtpark is Hamburg's biggest park, on the north side of town. Starting in the posh Eppendorf neighborhood, with a loop through the park, this run will give you a feel for how beautiful this city can be.
4. Altona Elbe River run: The Elbe its harbor forms Hamburg's self-image. The harbor, with its wharves and shipyards, has been refurbished, and provides a fascinating backdrop for a good run. Here is a run that heads west from Altona's Fischmarkt, through the old Oevelgoenne neighborhood and the mansions along the Elbchaussee. This 12km out-and-back run can easily be cut short at any time.
Enjoy your Hamburg runs!
