Germany's most popular spectator sport is soccer, called football by Europeans.  Hamburg is home to the Imtech Arena, which was built in 2000 and holds 56,000 fans. 

In 2006 the Arena played host to the World Cup games.  

One of Hamburg's professional soccer team, the Hamburger SV, calls the Arena its home. The other team, the FC St. Pauli, is at home at the Millerntor stadium in St. Pauli.

Hamburg also has a successful Handball team, the HSV handball, and a successful ice hockey team, Hamburg Freezers, who both are at home at the o2 World Hamburg arena.
