Though in the top ten of Germany’s most populated cities, Hannover is no Tokyo and can easily be explored on foot—its numerous cultural attractions are not located too distant from each other.  Getting lost on foot in its relatively hard-to-navigate, non-grid street system is also more rewarding and less grating than driving around for hours trying to find a destination, restaurant, or shop.

Taxi drivers, however, know their city, so if you know where you want to go, hailing one or making a reservation ahead of time is advised.

The public transportation system in the city, USTRA, comprised of tram and bus, is nothing to scoff at.  Visitors are encouraged to purchase 24-hour tickets so as to most efficiently move between attractions and nightlife venues.  Encompassing most of the city in its routes, brush up on your German and check the official site of USTRA for fares and schedules.

Traversing the rest of Germany by rail is certainly recommended as the inter-city transport mode of choice.
