Plaza de España

 

The Plaza de España is located at Calle del Coso, 25. The Paseo de la Independencia ends at this plaza and the plaza can be called one of the most important plazas in the city. The plaza has the Diputacion Provincial building, the Banco de España, and the Monument to the Martyrs. The monument honors the martyrs and defenders of the city who died during the War of Independence against the French. The architect of the monument was Ricardo Magdalena and the sculptor was Agustin Querol. There is a sculpture of an angel who helps a martyr who was hurt and the angel points to the sky. There is a cross that resembles the Cross of El Coso, which was a cross honoring Christian martyrs that was destroyed during the War of Independence. At the bottom of the figures is a figure of a woman that represents Zaragoza and its coat or arms. The monument was inaugurated in 1904.
