If you're looking for a novel featuring Grand Canary, you can try the book of the same name by Scottish author A.J. Cronin. This is a dramatic story published in 1933 about a young doctor who arrives in the Canary Islands just as a malaria epidemic is breaking out. This novel was made a movie starring Warner Baxter in 1934.
Another book entitled Grand Canary was written by Carmen Laforet, who grew up in Las Palmas before returning to her birthplace, Barcelona, at age 18. Her more famous book, however, is called "Nothingness," and is a bleak story about Barcelona immediately after the civil war.
Richard Burton's To the Gold Coast for Gold was written in 1883, and is a personal tale of some of Richard Burton's explorations. This book, while not one of his more famous works (and certainly not light beach-reading), devotes a chapter to Grand Canary and is available in the public domain for download.
