Leon has a continental climate from being located in the mountainous region of Spain. Because it is the northern most region of the country and in such a mountainous terrain, Leon lies in the country's coldest region. This causes shorter summers and cooler temperatures than what many assume when picturing the Spanish climate. With a higher altitude also comes longer and colder winters than the lower regions.

Late spring through early fall is the tourist high season in Leon. The summers are short so it is better to plan a trip as late into spring as possible and as early into fall. Summers are also quite hot and see a decent amount of rain. The average temperature falls in the 70s over the summer but can climb into the 80s and dip into the 50s. Bringing layers of clothing is important in this area as is sunscreen; the high altitude can leave visitors with sunburning if not adequately protected. That said, don't expect to get a beautiful golden tan here, for that you will have to head to the beach regions of Spain.

The mountainous regions have more rainfall due to the snow that exists over the winter. Christmas in the opposite season is a good time to come, however, if you are not averse to the temperatures which average out usually at just above freezing.
