Day Trip to the Dali Museum in Figueres

The Dali Museum is located in Figueres, in the province of Girona, and is about 143 km from Barcelona. The Dali Museum is the second most visited museum in Spain, after the Prado. One can go to Figueres using the slower local trains or to Figueres Vilafant by high-speed train + taxi/bus. Here are instructions to take the train:

1) By MD or Regional train from Sants or Passeig de Gracia stations to Figueres station, under 2 hours, 11.20 -15 €. Buy ticket at station on the day of travel.

2) By high-speed  AVE or AVANT from Sants station to Figueres Vilafant station, 50 minutes, circa 35  €. Buy online or at the station. The Figueres Vilafant station is not close to the Museum, but there is a bus connecting the station with the city center (200 meters from the Museum) within less than ten minutes. The bus ticket costs 1,25 €, and there is a bus every 25-30 minutes. Taxis are also available at the Figueres Vilafant station.

The Dali Museum is very entertaining and no one is really prepared for it because it is so very different. Dali designed it in the last years of his life, designing every little detail. The outside walls have small sculptures of bread buns. On top of the museum you see golden mannequins and giant eggs.

Once you enter the museum you go to a patio that has his Cadillac, and on top of the hood of the car is a sculpture of a woman. There is a wall that contains many more gold mannequins. Later one enters the building and there is a large painting done by Dali. It looks like it has several figures of Venus de Milo, but when you squint your eyes, the painting metamorphoses into the face of Abraham Lincoln.

There are about 5 stories in the circular building, filled with Dali’s art. What is very difficult is to exit the building, which seems surreal to the visitor, and perhaps that is what Dali wanted to do, to make it difficult to leave his building. One exits in the basement through the gift store, where one is tempted to buy many expensive souvenirs.

There is also the Dali jewels museum just on the corner from the museum.

One can have lunch at Imperial 82, a very good restaurant beside the museum. There is also a good lunch restaurant "L'ou d'or" called la truiteria by locals carrer Sant Llatzer ( a street on the Rambla from Figueres, 10 min walking from Dali museum )

IMPORTANT: Queues can be quite long during high season and the museum is quite large so, if you want to make the most of it,  it is advisable to take an early train from Barcelona to avoid long waiting times.
