Roman Circus  and Praetorium of Tarragona

The Roman Circus was built in the 1st century and had a capacity of about 30,000 spectators and was used to hold horse and chariot races. It measured 325 x 115 meters. It is one of the best preserved circuses , but part of it remains hidden under 19th century buildings. The Praetorium is a Roman tower that used to have the stairs that connected the lower city to the provincial forum by way of the circus, using underground passageways. In the 16th century it was turned into a palace for the Catalan and Aragonese kings. Later it was used as a prison.
