There are plenty of places to rent a car in Alicante. The easiest place to do this is at the airport, where half a dozen car rental agencies have offices inside the terminal (Centauro, Avis, Hertz, Europa Car, and others). From there, it is 15-20 minutes to get into the town center. Having a car is a good way to tour the city, as the attractions are spaced far apart enough to make walking somewhat tedious. Also, some places of interest such as the Santa Barbara Castle are located outside the city, so they can only be accessed by automobile.

The city of Alicante has a public bus transportation system. These buses, however, can be unreliable and slow. On the other hand, the bus fares are quite cheap and the drivers tend to be friendly and will tell you when to get off if you give them the destination. Taxis are a better (but more expensive) way to go, and there are two or three dozen taxi stands on the city’s busier streets. The cabs can also be ordered in advance from Radio Taxi (phone: (965) 910123), Tele Taxi (phone: (965) 101611) or Area Taxi (phone: (965) 910 591). For handicapped-accessible cars, call Euro Taxi Minusvalidos at (965) 910574.
