DAY TRIPS FROM SORRENTO

Sorrento is well placed for visiting the surrounding area. Public transport links are great - easy to use and inexpensive.

This is list of just some of the places you can visit.

AMALFI COAST

Visit the many towns/villages of this wonderful coastline by bus, by sea, by arranging a private guide, or with your tour operator if you are travelling with one.

Amalfi, Positano, Ravello, Maiori, Minori, Praiano, Scala, Atrani. Conca dei Marini are some of the highlights.

NAPLES

Take a train or boat/hydrofoil to Naples to visit this bustling “chaotic” city, the capital of the Campania Region.

Look beyond the initial madness and there is a city steeped in history and architecture, a multitude of museums, galleries, churches/cathedrals.

Naples has a reputation as a dangerous city. You have to be careful and take precautions just as you would in any big city; no expensive jewellery on show, keep your money safe etc

This is an interesting link from the Naples Forum posted by a DE.

THE ISLANDS

Capri, Ischia and Procida are 3 islands in the Gulf of Naples.

CAPRI

http://www.capri.net/ is a good site. There are boats/hydrofoils from Sorrento at a cost of between 9.80 - 14.50 Euros. Timetables frequently change - pick up timetables from the Tourist Information office in Sorrento located inside the entrance to the Circolo dei Forestieri (Foreigner’s Club) just off Piazza San Antonino.

ISCHIA

Currently only one ferry to and from the island leaving Sorrento at 0920 and returning at 1720.

Have a look at these sites for information about the island. A regular poster on the Sorrento forum, A Brit in Ischia, has this website full of wonderful photographs, of many places as well as Ischia. http://www.pbase.com/isolaverde/root

THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITES

POMPEII

This is an interesting site too: http://www.thecolefamily.com/italy/po...

ERCOLANO

http://www.pompeiisites.org/Sezione.j...

Pompeii and Ercolano can both be reached by train from Sorrento. Pompeii Scavi and Ercolano Scavi are the closest stations to each site.

When visiting the sites it is advisable to take plenty of water and comfortable shoes. Pompeii is massive site, it takes hours to see the site, a couple of hours is not enough but, it depends how much you want to see and experience.

MOUNT VESUVIUS

Not for the faint-hearted, it is possible to climb Mount Vesuvius.

ROME FOR A DAY

Rome is about 4 hours away by road and 2 ½ - 3 hours by rail. Obviously more than a day in Rome is required to appreciate its sights and attractions, but if that’s all the time you have you can certainly enjoy a “whistle-stop tour”. Take the Curreri Viaggi bus http://www.curreriviaggi.it/ from the station in Sorrento at 0630. It leaves Rome at 1400, so you may wish to return by train for a longer visit that the bus timetable would allow.

Tour operators also offer a day trip to Rome.

There are many places to visit, things to see and do. This is a list of some of the most popular.
