Head to Pompeii or Herculaneum to view the archeological ruins, or “scavi”, destroyed by the 79 A.D. eruption of Mount Vesuvius
From Naples ’ Centrale train station at Piazza Garibaldi, buy a “Unico Campania ” ticket at a newsstand or tabacci shop (tobacco/convenience store), and validate in yellow boxes located near the station entrance and tracks. One way tickets are currently 2.40 euros, while daily tickets good for your roundtrip journey are 4.60 euros. Follow signs for the “Circumvesuviana” train line to the lowest level of the station (currently undergoing renovation). Trains leave the station every 20-30 minutes.
For Herculaneum ruins, exit at the “Ercolano scavi” stop and walk downhill for about 1 km (½ mile).
For Pompeii ruins, exit at the “ Pompeii scavi, Villa dei Misteri” stop and walk approximately 100 meters to the Pompeii Marina gate entrance.
Private guides can be hired at the entrance to Pompeii or Herculaneum , or comprehensive audio guides can be rented at each site for a modest fee. Alternatively, you can take an organized tour which normally includes transport to/from downtown Naples and a guide to show you highlights of the site.
