Opened in 1911 the Zoo is today visited by over 600,000 people, of which 50,000 are students. The Bioparco Foundation is a nonprofit group that manages the zoo and works for international cooperation and for the conservation of species threatened with extinction. The concept of a zoo as a "living museum has given way to that of environmental education through exhibitions, conferences, activities, media events and educational tours.

The Zoo is major attraction in Rome; a great alternative to traditional cultural places like monuments, museums and churches
