Via dell'Indipendenza runs from the north of the city, near Bologna Centrale train station, straight down to the main centre: Piazza Maggiore.
This busy street is lined from start to finish with porticos - those all important (and very clever) built in covers from the sun (or rain), shops and businesses.
A walk down the street that is approximately 1km would take you roughly 15-20 minutes – that is, if you’re not distracted by one of the many businesses on the street.
You’ll find shops for clothes, shoes, make-up, underwear, sports goods, children’s toys; something to suit every budget.
There are cafes selling the obligatory caffe and more, light snacks, pizza, piadinas and paninis; some with plenty seating under the porticos.
You’ll find some restaurants off one of the many side streets; for example Montegrappa da Nello on Via Monte Grappa, heading south on the right hand side close to Piazza Maggiore.
A trip to Bologna should not be considered complete without a walk along Via dell’Indipendenza. (Please do remember your comfortable walking shoes!)
