Opened in 2001, these gardens surround the magnificent Trauttmansdorff Castle. The gardens cover over 30 acres of land, and are a showcase for the unique possibilities of Merano's distinct micro-climate. Both local and exotic flora thrive in the gardens, which are divided into for major sections. In the Forests of the World section grow a wide variety of deciduous trees native to North America and Asia. The Sun Garden houses Mediterranean species, including lemon, olive and fig trees, cypress, and grape vines. The Water and Terrace Gardens incorporate a large lily pond with tropical species of water lilies, as well as an impressive array of orchids. In addition, there are various pavilions explaining scientific facts about the various plant species, and three large greenhouses. Guided tours are available.
The gardens are open from the beginning of April through the middle of November from 9am to 6pm or 9pm during the summer. Admission for adults is 9.5 euros. Children under six get in free. There are discounts for large groups.
