There is always something going on in Venice virtually all year around!

The main event is with no doubt the Carnival of Venice which takes place in February and goes on for about 10 days. During those days you can wear a custom and/or a mask pretty much anywhere except in churches and in some restaurants.

In April, Venice celebrates St. Mark (the patron saint of the city) and on St.Mark's day it is tradition that every man in Venice gives a single bud rose to his beloved one. In May they celebrate the Ascension Day called La Festa della Sensa, the wedding day between Venice and the Sea. Also in May is the rowing marathon around Venice and its lagoon called Vogalonga.

From June to October every other the International modern art-exposition called Biennale attracts different artists and visitors from all over the world. In July is the religious festival called Festa del Redentore to commemorate the end of the plague in 1577.

In September, the Venice Film Festival takes place on the island of Lido.  The Golden Lion is awarded for best film.  http://www.labiennale.org/en/cinema/

In the same period takes place the Historical Regatta (the first Sunday of September), it is a fascinating event for visitors but an exciting event for Venetians, too because after the procession there is the competition. Here are some info about this event  http://www.veneziasi.it/content/view/...

Also in September, the Burano Regatta takes place on the island of Burano.  This afternoon event consists of boat and gondola races, and ends with an outdoor concert.
