Weather is the first thing to look at before you organize your Sicily holidays . Generally it's really different in respect of that one of the main land of Italy.
Sicily, located between Europe and Africa, has a temperate climate. Being the largest Island in the Mediterranean for its latitude it gets fairly predictable weather patterns although the weather being all over the place lately, one might get the wrong impression.
During the winter months it can get pretty chilly, and rainfall will increase. Sicily is a mountainous island with temperatures varying from sea level to higher ground , snowfall can be rather large too but only on the peaks. On Mt. Etna, an active volcano on the east side of the island, snowfall can still reach up to 5 ft in March if there is a big storm. Still, that is rare, and only on the top of the mountain.
Truly the best time to visit Sicily is during March, April and May . This is at the begining of the season. Another good thing about going in the spring is you will avoid the masses of tourists . Sicily has some great beach communities which bulk up during hotter months. If you want to avoid the tourist scene and get a real feel for the island, it's best to visit when it will not be as hectic. There are always flowers and colours in Sicily all over the island but in the spring the scent is simply magnificent. The colours and scents will be more intense in later months when it is hotter.
In the summer, temperatures can reach up to 120 degrees farenheit, but
it is a dry heat, so you will not necessarily sweat to death although
when they have the scirocco (a stong wind that blow in from the Sahara)
it can be very hot and humid. As global warming sets in that seems to
happen more frequently with temperatures going above the norm but
when at best can be compared to the arid heat of the desert, or a
climate like Arizona. Average temperatures in Summer range from 25 to 35 degrees centigrade depending on the elevation.
Other months to visit Sicily are September and October and it can be pushed to Novemer but in November it will be the luck of the draw if lucky at worst it will be pleasanty warm.
Autumn, winter and spring time are perfect times for relaxing and exploring especially for those who are not beach type of people and who enjoy food, wine, culture and exploring.
Not everything is perfect in Sicily but you will enjoy your visit - you will find The Good, The Bad and even The Ugly because Sicily is not like any other place; it has its own character. These passionate people have their own way of doing things and it might appear confusing to a newcomer, perhaps at times it will even infuriate you. But on your return home you will probably laugh about it in an affectionate way .
