Trips to Pisa’s museums and historic attractions give visitors an insight into the culture and traditions of Tuscany as well as the country of Italy and its people as a whole.
Every trip to Pisa starts at the Campo dei Miracoli or the Field of Miracles, a huge green square that was laid out in the mid-eleventh century. Located next to magnificent medieval walls, this “field” contains several important landmarks, one of which is the Duomo with its famous Bell tower (which slipped after construction and has become the famous Leaning Tower ever since). Other architectural masterpieces on the Field of Miracles include the Baptistry and Camposanto, a monumental cemetery.
Besides these architectural masterpieces, don’t forget to visit Pisa’s other historic landmarks and attractions including the Museo Nazionale di San Matteo (San Matteo National Musem), featuring an impressive collection of medieval paintings by such artists as Giunta Pisano, Simone Martini and Beato Angelico. For cultural buffs, plan to visit the Palazzo Reale National Museum , a former residence of the Medici and Lorena courts that houses magnificent art and tapestries by such great artists as Raffaello.
If you are interested in the works of such greats as Nicola and Giovanni Pisano and Tino di Camaino, pay a visit to the Museum of the Opera del Duomo , displaying works from the Piazza del Duomo. An unusual museum is the Sinopite Drawing Museum , which features the sketches for cemetery frescoes using sinopite, a special type of red earth.
So, before hurrying off to other resorts and towns of beautiful Tuscany, give Pisa a few days to enjoy all the wonderful attractions she has to offer.
