In the summertime, a day hike from Grindelwald in almost any direction will be rewarded with eye-planting memories of alpine meadows, rugged mountains, and a pristine lake (the Balchapsee). Take the trail to Schynigge Platte through the Bernese Oberland region in the shadow of the Eiger, Monch, and Jungfrau mountains.
Take a gondola ride from Grindelwald to Manlichen, Bort, or First and back or hop on a train and enjoy some spectacular views either way. Leave in the morning on an aerial cablecar ride to Pfingstegg, among Grindelwald's glaciers. Spend the day hiking and sighing contentedly, and bring a picnic lunch or eat at the nearby restaurant.
An adventure to remember is a train ride to Jungfraujoch, Europe's highest train station. Summer or winter, the Jungfraubahn Railway will transport you , not around or over, but through Eiger and Monch Mountains to the summit of their triplet, Jungfrau Mountain. The train makes two stops inside the mountains where observation windows in the mountainside overlook the surrounding countryside.
The Oberer Glacier has a series of steep, narrow ladders that allows the brave of heart to get get up-close-and-personal with the glacier (and each other while passing). At the top is a concession where you can get some refreshment.
The Blue Ice Cave ( click here for a nice pic) is located in the Upper Grindelwald Glacier and at the Lower Glacier is Glacier Gorge. In the winter, rent nordic skis or snowshoes and trek around Grindelwald's surrounding valley.
