Located in the very south of Switzerland, Locarno has the most mild of all the other areas in the country. Classified as a subtropical climate it also receives an abundance of sunshine all year round. The weather in Locarno is comfortable all year! For warm summers and sunny and mild winters, visiting any time of year is definitely possible.  

No matter what time of year you arrive, there are plenty of activities to partake in. In the summer you have the benefit of swimming in the lake, but the winter brings beautiful snow, nearby skiing and Christmas markets. The winters average weather lies above freezing making it a very bearable place to remain outdoors even during January. Summers don't actually get that hot, the 70s range is normal.

There are many great events to plan your vacation in Locarno around. The summer has several great festivals, notably the International Locarno Film Festival which takes place annually. Many flock to the city at this time and therefore, many of the local shops, restaurants, bars, and more become more alive and put up specials; it's a great time to visit. On the opposite end however, Locarno is beautiful over the holiday season in December and those who prefer a wintry vacation usually choose to come over Christmas.
