In the past years, the Witte de Withstraat has transformed into one Rotterdam's finest going out districts. In the 70's and 80's the Witte de Withstreet was a no-go area with seedy coffeeshops and illegal gambling places. Since the 90's the government has been trying to improve the street's image by giving artists the chance to open art galleries here. Only in the past decade did the street really transform into a major going out district. Today it is one of the places to be in Rotterdam. Here you can find a great variety of restaurants, cafés, bars, clubs and ofcourse art galleries. Cafe De Witte Aap and bar and club Blender are for example located in this area. The Witte de Withstraat still retains that artistic vibe. Not in the last place because of the Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art. The success of this street in recent years seems to flow over into neighboring streets such as the Hartmanstraat and the Schiedamse Vest, both with a good selection of restaurants in all price ranges and some interesting specialty stores. In the Boomgaardstraat, you can find WORM. This self proclaimed "Institute for Avant-Gardist Receation" hosts all kinds of events such as concerts, movie nights and dance events. Witte de Withstraat and it's surrounding neighborhood is a not-to-miss attraction for anyone visiting Rotterdam.
