Rotterdam is a shopper’s delight. The city is divided into multiple distinct shopping districts, each with their own flavor and personality. Much depends on what you’re looking for and what kind of shopping experience you want to have.
The main shopping district is centered around the Lijnbaan, Binnenwegplein, Beurstraverse (better known as Koopgoot), Coolsingel and Hoogstraat. These streets mainly offer the well-known mainstream retail chains and brands. The Lijnbaan is known for its shoe stores, while the main big warehouses like De Bijenkorf, V&D and HEMA are located in the surroundings of the Beurstraverse. Central Plaza and the Kruiskade offer some of the more exclusive stores and brands. More to the border of these main shopping streets lie shopping streets like the Van Oldenbarneveltstraat and Karel Doormanstraat.
For the more alternative shopping experience, there are many offerings. Looking for the creative, up and coming, young? Head for dynamic streets like the Witte de Withstraat, Meent, Pannekoekstraat, Nieuwemarkt, and the historic Oude & Nieuwe Binnenweg, where you’ll find music stores, independent fashion stores, and art galleries. Indeed, these streets are a vibrant mix of culture and happy modernism.
If you are looking for a multicultural shopping street that is a melting pot of many cultures you should visit the West-Kruiskade. The West-Kruiskade is located near the Central Station in the west of the city center. It is home to entrepreneurs of different ethnic backgrounds, among which entrepreneurs with Moroccan, Surinamese, Turkish and many other backgrounds. The eastern part of this street is home to a significant Chinese community with some Chinese shops, restaurants and cafes. This part is sometimes dubbed the "Chinatown" of Rotterdam.
If you want a feel for “old” Holland, separate from the very modern Rotterdam, visit the shopping area found around the historic Delfshaven area. This tidy area features a wide variety of intimate shopping experiences which range from small galleries to fashion stores and a beer brewery. There is a true sense of the old and historic that pervades this area, which is in sharp contrast to most of Rotterdam otherwise.
