Many of the visitors to Bruge arrive by the P&O Hull to Zeebrugge Ferry , amongst these are many Disabled Passengers using either Wheelchairs or Mobility Scooters, the following information may be of help if you fall into this catergory !
There are several Disabled Use Cabins available on the Ferry , to make sure you obtain one when making your journey plans you have to call P&O Ferries on the Telphone number displayed on the web site , please note this is an 0870 number costing 10p per minute ( you can find a landline number by using "SAYNOTO0870.com ) When connected inform the operator you require a Disabled Cabin for a wheelchair user , you can book a Disabled Cabin for Crutch or walking aids users BUT if a wheelchair user books after you they will be given priority and you will be moved to a "normal" cabin .
When you arrive at the Port of Hull Terminal you will find Car parking spaces for Disabled passengers near to the terminal building (£7 per night ) taking the fact that you are travelling as a foot passenger , car drivers should follow the directions to the Ferry where they will be given assistance from the loaders .
Inside the terminal you will find that all the desks are of "normal" height , that is to say for a standing passenger , but are quite accessable by wheelchair users , once checked in you have a choice of entry modes to the Ferry , Firstly , you can make your own way to the Ferry using the lifts to access the upper floors to the entrance , Please Note this entails a long incline up to the Ferry embarkation point . assistance is given by ship crew members at this point to access the Ship . This method will be more suited to Mobility Scooters and electric wheelchairs !
If you are using a Manually propelled Wheelchair it is better to have assistance from the Ships crew , just ask the booking staff and they will arrange this for you , as said before there is a steep incline up to the ship which would be difficult without assistance ( unless your a para-oliympian ) once onboard you will be escorted to your cabin , extra pillows available on request if you need them .
The Cabins: The cabins provided for disabled passengers are of a very good standard with wide access doors and space between the berths , berths are lowered for easy use for both the disabled passenger and partner/carer if accompanied ! There is a seperate Toilet/Shower room with direct wide access to all facilitie including a shower seat and grab rails . In both rooms there is provided "Emergency" Cords and push buttons to summon assistance if required , please use only for emergency needs if you need assistance to the bars or Restaurant please ask at the reception desk onboard , its on the same level as the cabins !.
Disembarkatoin : this is slightly different from Hull as you have to have a crew member with you to operate the lifts down to the terminal exit , operated by a key these lifts are smaller than the Hull ones so may need 2 trips if taking large luggage and a carer . Upon your return the Check in staff will arrange for your return to the ship.
Extra Information: at Zeebrugge there is a Disability Mini Bus service available for onward transport to Bruge ,for Mini-Cruise passengers included in coach fare , for extended stay passengers coach travel tickets can be purchased at time of booking , this must be booked at the same time as your journey is booked and will be done by the same person who booked your journey for you ! This is an excellent service and the driver , Nancy , is extremley helpful and careful with the passengers , this is an excellent service provided by P&O Ferries .
You will enjoy your trip with the Disabled facilities available and this will only add to the overall experience of visiting Bruge !
