To learn more about the history of Portugal, pick up a copy of “A Concise History of Portugal,” by David Birmingham. Other books worth reading are “Portuguese Seaborne Empire,” by Charles Ralph Boxer; and “Portugal: A Companion History,” by Jose H. Saraiva.

For an even wider knowledge base, pick up “Journey to Portugal: In Pursuit of Portugal’s History and Culure,” by Jose Saramago; and “The Portuguese: The Land and Its People,” by Marion Kaplan, which offers history, plus economy, architecture, and literature, and more.

If you prefer fiction, go for something by native Portugal writer Eca de Queiroz, such as “The Sin of Father Amaro,” “The Illustrious House of Ramires,” The Relic,” or “The Maias,” which is his best-known work. Other works of fiction to peruse include, “The Return of the Caravels,” by Antonio Lobo Antunes; and “The Portuguese Letters,” by Maria   Isabel Barreno, Maria Teresa Horta, and Maria Fatima Velho da Costa.

The Lusiadas by Luis Vaz de Camoes is the masterpiece of Portuguese Literature, a 10-canto poem from 17572, follow the legend of Vasco da Gama, from Lisbon to India. The site of his life time, Jernomimos, Belem tower, and Sintra all evoke his tale. His tues hoers over the Chiado.

Poems of Fernando Pessoa by Fernando Pessoa – this giant of poet in the quiet body of humble man... Write most of his work in Lisbon, his evict in now a evict, and his statue sits eternally at the Chiado’s Brasiliera Café.
