Travelers will find that the roads of Algarve, although not always up to international standards, are generally easy and safe to travel on and therefore both rental cars and taxis are viable travel options in the area. Rental cars are most frequently obtained at the airport upon arrival in the area. More information about airport arrival is available in the Faro Airport - Car Hire Operators article.
Taxis can be obtained at taxi stands at the airport.
This document (as of 25.1.13 it has disppeared from the official website!) gives a list of typical taxi fares from the airport to various popular tourist destinations. Be aware this is only a guide. Taxi fares are increased by 20% after 2100hrs on weekdays also all day Saturdays, Sundays and holidays.
Some sample weekday fares from a printed copy of the taxi information thus:
Albufeira €42, Lagos €85, Praia da Rocha €70, Tavira €41, Vale do Lobo €22, Vilamoura €27
A pre-booked mini-bus or van transfer will in almost all cases be cheaper than a taxi. There are many licensed transfer companies operating to and from Faro airport. A search of Trip Advisor will bring recommendations - use the 'search box' at the head of the forum first, as it is highly likely that your question will have recently been asked.or read below for some relevant websites.
The cheapest transfer companies will often use 50 seater buses. It is likely that such a transfer takes a lot longer than a minibus, as passenger will be sharing with a large number of people travelling to many different destinations.
Taxis may sometimes be hailed on the street, but it usual to telephone from your hotel or apartment. In most towns there is only one number to call. Most do not take advance bookings, just telephone a few minutes before you wish to leave.
All tourist resorts and other towns have taxi ranks in the central areas. Queues can be long in the peak summer season and at those times it is usually not possible to hail a taxi elsewhere.
Taxis are easy to see on the streets. Some are beige in colour, some are painted an interesting combination of black and green. All have signs saying “Taxi” atop them. Taxi fares are not standardized but taxis are metered, so visitors negotiating rates with the drivers before getting in to the taxi should not have any problems with receiving a reasonable rate. Visitors should know that it is standard practice for taxi drivers to charge extra to take luggage, especially when traveling to and from the airport. Additionally, though it is not required, it is standard to tip taxi drivers. Drivers are usually English speaking and may be available for hire as tour guides.
Airport transfer prices, from / to Faro airport, vary from company to company but all charge roughly the same.
Doing a search for the term "Airport Transfers" in the search bar will provide you with plenty of options. There are several websites and all can provide you with online reservations.
You can pre-book a pick up in the Algarve if you do not want the hassle of haggling with local taxi drivers or if you are a larger group travelling together
