After seeing the sights in Lagos take a day, or two or even three, to explore the nearby countryside. The area of Algarve on the South Coast of Portugal is one of sunny days in the summer, with warm waters. To the east is Meia Praia, a sandy beach that rises of out of the sea. Further west are the old fishing villages of Praia da Luz and Burgau. These offer a quiet scene to the resorts of Lagos.Several old medieval fortresses are present along the Western Algarve, and these were built to help fend off the raids by Dutch and English pirates. And finally head to Vila do Bispo, which has the honor of being the most south-west location in Europe. This small coastal town was an old, and that would be very old, stomping ground of Prince Henry the Navigator. From here he planned several of his voyages. Vila do Bispo is also a spot where you can feel the old world charms in the narrow streets with its whitewashed walls and carved stonework. Of course most impressive are the towering cliffs of the coast, which make for a unique spot where you can gaze out to the Atlantic from the very edge of Europe!
