Visitors to the city of Coimbra have various opportunities to watch, and participate in a number of sports and activities. 

            The University of Coimbra is the longest continually running institution of higher learning in the country of Portugal, and one of the oldest universities in the entire world.  With this, it has established a sports program that includes amongst other things rugby, basketball, handball, gymnastics and swimming.  However, the sports team that draws the most attention in Coimbra is the Briosa Football (or soccer) Club, which plays in the Academica de Coimbra Football organization.  This team plays very competitively in the top Portuguese football league, and has won the Portuguese Football Cup.
