There are two main islands in the Madeira Islands region and it is common for visitors to be interested in navigating between the two locations in order to get the greatest experience of the activity of the area. Navigation between the two locations can be done either by commuter flight or by boat. The latter is the preferable method because it allows visitors to experience the beautiful nature of the area in a more intimate manner.
Within the islands, travel will consist of a combination of different methods of transportation. On Madeira Island , which is the largest of the islands, and particularly within the capital city of Funchal , it is easy to get around using public transportation. There is a bus system which runs all throughout the city of Funchal and extends fairly far out to the different areas surrounding that city. A bus timetable for the whole of the island can be purchased at the main tourist office in Funcahal for a small fee.
For travel to the other areas as well as for internal travel on the other islands, a combination of walking and car travel should be what is best suited to most travelers. The smaller islands and towns can be easily navigated on foot. Many travelers come to the area for hiking and so walking is not out of the question to get to the attractions and areas of interest to them. Other travelers will find that car rental, most suitable obtained at the airport upon arrival in the area ( http://www.tripadvisor.com/Travel-g18...), is the way to go.
