Funchal

There is so many things to do and see in Funchal, that you will need a couple of days alone to familiarise yourself with this magical town. There is something for everyone. From museums, enchanting gardens, wine tasting, typical market to cable car and toboggan rides, sightseeing tours and numerous boat trips. You can also just sit, sipping away on your favourite drink, in one of many of Funchal's esplanades and watch the world go by.

Nuns' Valley

Take a taxi in the late afternoon (when the tour busses have left) about 4 pm to Curral das Freiras (Nun's Valley) via two viewpoints. It's a wonderful spot surrounded by steep mountains and accessible via a recent road tunnel. Only a short drive from Funchal, this is a must if you only have time for one mountain excursion. Pick a clear day for alpine views and sheer tranquillity.
