The architecture of Porto offers much to see for both the novice tourist and the experienced architect. There are many historic buildings scattered throughout the area, some of which are notable historic sites and others which are just waiting to be discovered by wandering tourists. One of the best ways of seeing the architecture of Porto is to just get out into the streets and get lost in the buildings.
One area where interesting architecture can be seen while other travel activities take place is the Ribiera do Porto. This is waterfront property which includes several different shops and restaurants. The buildings each have a unique style to them and visitors will enjoy looking at them while indulging in dining or shopping.
The churches of Porto are probably the most notable historic buildings which travelers interested in architecture will not want to miss. The most famous of these is the Igreja de Sao Francisco which is a gothic church. Visitors stopping by should note that the internal structure is more compelling than the external part and there are catacombs underground, so this is a place where getting out and looking around is highly recommended.
In terms of non-building architecture, the best sight to see is the Ponte de D. Louis which is an iron bridge not to be missed. Information on other architectural sights is online at http://www.archinform.net/ort/1420.ht... .
Porto also has some modern architecture worth noting, like the Casa da Musica by OMA, and the Boa Nova Tea House (Casa de Chá Boa-Nova) by Alvaro Siza. For a list of recommended sites, including address and google map locations check out http://www.checkonsite.com/browse/loc...
