Psiri area

The alternative of Plaka

This is a picturesque area in the centre of the city very close to Monastiraki Square. It has a strong local colour, not so touristy like the Plaka but unique in its style. When you get there you think the place has been bombed old houses ready to fall apart while others have been beautifully renovated and been turned into trendy places that attract the Athenians so much. Old traditional tavernas, most with live music, where you can see people standing up spontaneously to dance so you enjoy something so original without having to watch some tourist program set up for you . You can reach it either on foot from the Syntagma Square or from two metro station The theisseion or the Monastiraki metro station

Omonia

Omonia situated around the Omonia square to the north of the city is a particularly unappealing area. It is the main location for drug dealers, drug addicts and prostitutes. In many of the open areas you will find all of the above loitering around the area at any time of day which does not make for a good location. Definetly one to avoid for your accomodation, in particular if travelling with children.

Monastiraki

A central area near many of the major sights, it is a mix of well tended and decrepit buildings. Overall though a  pleasant location with good range of hotels, restaurants, bars, shops and facilities and right in the heart of the action an ideal base for exploring Athens.

Plaka

The centre of Athens city and the tourst heart. Most of the attractions border the Plaka area and it is an ideal central location. Well served by public transport with excellent amenities it is a great place to be. It is however extremely touristy, expect to find your "tradtiional" greek everything here. Bustling hive of activity and great fun but if you want to sample something more genuinely authentic you might be better in a different location.

Piraeus

Escape the City for the Beach

Piraeus is some 40 mins away from the centre of athens by either tram from Syntagma or underground from Monastiraki squares it provides a fantastic break from the city. Full of charming little streets and natural harbours it provides an ideal place to escape the bustle of the city and relax. Also an ideal spot for people watching and makes a fab evening out with a massive range of mainly seafood restaurants serving the best catch of the day and good bars. Its a great area for nightlife and people watching. Not cheap, but great fun.
