If you are looking for a shortish scenic walk, it is well worth driving from Kissamos on the Western Crete coast on the inland road to the village of Polyrrinia.  There you will find there is  a climb to the ancient ruins. The first part of the walk from the village to the old Church of the 99 Holy Fathers is easy, and this is a good spot for a picnic. The walk "round" the hill is slightly harder and you can make the ascent to the viewpoint at the top.  You will have to go down the way you came up, as  if there was once a round walk, its track has long been lost. There is a useful  little guide-sheet available at the informal (English run) information house in the village.
