Compared to many other cities in the general area, Tampere is relatively young, as it was only established in the year of 1779. Recent discoveries however have revealed that the area where the city lies today may have been in habited as many as 8,000 years ago.
The King of Sweden (Gustav III) was responsible for building Tampere in 1779, when he visited the land and deemed it suitable for a new city. Although a distillery attracted some workers to settle in the city, Tampere remained very small for the following few decades. The total population at the turn of the century was less than 500.
In 1808, Russian troops invaded Tampere and took over the city. This was a result of the war between Sweden and Russia, as Tampere was a key location for the battle. One year later, all of Finland was taken over by the Russians, which negated all Swedish law that had been followed in the country until that time.
During the early 1800’s, the city began developing as an important industrial location. Over time, Tempere became the largest industrial city in the entire country of Finland.For more information, check out this detailed history of Tampere .
