The Burggarten in central Vienna is part of the former private garden belonging to the monarch and attached to the former Imperial Winter Palace - the Hofburg. The French army led by Napoleon smashed down part of the palace wall and in 1818 the Kaiser gave Ludwig Remy the job of creating this special garden. In the year 1919 the garden was opened to the general public. It covers an area of 38,000 sqm. and contains a pond and many famous garden sculptures featuring Mozart, the Kaiser and others. In the park there is also perhaps the worlds most beautiful " jugendstil " greenhouse. This greenhouse now houses a very beautiful butterfly house where hundreds of tropical butterflies fly around amongst the exotic plants. The Burggarten is on the Ringstrasse, very close to the Opera building, right in the centre of Vienna.
