Downtown Bergen is compact and the average fit can easily cover the centre walking. Driving within the centre can be demanding as many streets are narrow, one-way, reserved for buses/light rail or arranged to divert traffic away from the centre. Numerous tunnels may also add to navigation difficulties.

The new light suburban rail opened in 2010, traffic patterns have changed.

Best advice if you arrive by car: Find a safe place to leave it, and continue on foot.

Parking is generally forbidden in the very centre (called zone 1), except at parking meters or in parking garages ("parkeringshus") or in the parking tunnel (Klostergarasjen) under the centre. The surrounding downtown areas (other zones), there is free parking for visitors only between 23 at night and 8 in the morning.

There is also a free shuttle bus across the centre.
