TRIPS OUT/THINGS TO DO
San Marino The train journey to Rimmini is 12 Euro for four adults return (It takes about twenty minutes) and the bus is 6.80 Euros each return to San Marino (it takes about 35 minutes). The trains are clean, prompt and quite comfortable, the bus service is also excellent. San Marino is an extremely beautiful place set in the mountains. Anyone with walking problems could struggle to get around given the steepness of the walking. Going by public transport allowed you to stay for at least four hours or more by which time you will have scratched the surface of San Marino. You can get some great bargains here; for example a football replica shirt for 8 Euro, some quality designer bags for what some may call excellent prices from a reputable shop.
Gradara This is a small village about 4k from the hotel and can be reached by one of the many “Noddy Trains”. Reps say that no one smiles on these trains and that you should wave and smile on the train. They're joking! The train is the sort that young children go on around theme parks at about 5 miles an hour. This one goes about thirty miles an hour, over bumps and the adults need to hang on for dear life as there are no belts to hold you in. However, the experience may be a white knuckle ride but Gradara again for a short ride out is worth seeing. The Noddy Trains are about 8 Euro return, with the locals as always paying less. Apart of seeing the Rocca and the Church of Sait Giovanni you can visit The Ornithological Park Falconry Center "Il Teatro dell'Aria". Park is situated at the Lovers Lane "Viale degli innamorati" and offers unique experience. You can admire falcons, hawks, owls, vultures and eagles. Spectacle takes place in the surrounding wall of medieval castle and breathtaking panorama of the Adriatic Riviera. Visit cost: 4,50Euro. For more information visit www.ilteatrodellaria.it The Le Botte restaurant is an excellent place for lunch in Gradara, with real Italian fare. A meal for four with wine is 50 Euro, the quality is excellent and so is the service. Italian Evening This evening is back by popular demand?. At the top of Gradara is a half open and a half closed restaurant seating around 300 people. The coach on the tours picks up at 8pm getting to Gradara at around 8.30pm. The meal consists of a pasta course, meat course and dessert and wime. During the meal you have traditional singing, magic show, jugglers and skaters who wow the kids. This is an excellent night for children. At 12pm you have to return to your coaches leaving the locals to continue dancing.
Le Navi This is at the other end of Cattolica from Gabbice Mare. For people who have been to the Sea Life experiances in the UK this is very similar. You can spend at least a half a day here taking some wonderful photos. Very educational, but fun and interesting at the same time. The colours of some of the fish are stunning.
Water Park/Theme Park/Little Italy There is so much more you can do and the above are some of the other things that you can reach from public transport. Go to http://www.adria.net/parchien.html for further details. There are lots more things to do.
Promenade/Dancing fountains Every evening at about 9.45 in one of the many squares with fountains (this one is on the front opposite Mc Donalds) they have the dancing fountains. The lights go dim and the fountains dance to various pieces of music. Lasts for about 15 minutes but is worth watching. Many of the squares have various street acts and performers. You can watch and dance to Cuban bands, Italian singers and a small group from around the world. Every evening you can join in with the promenading to try and burn some calories up, whereby you will always put them back on with one of the delicious ice creams for sale from the various vendors. The Italians come out in force as families, no yobs and very few Brits making a nuisance of themselves. Cattolica is a very safe feeling place that is extremely friendly. A great Family resort!
Beach The Beaches are layed out in rows and cost you several Euros to get a bed. You can negotiate a weekly rate which brings the price down but if it rains you lose your money. Because you are paying to be on the Beach they are very clean and there is lots to do on them. You need to speak to various people to get the facilities that you are looking for and the price that you want to pay. This is one of those times to haggle. The Sea looks green in colour and is clean and safe to swim in.
Local Swimming Pool If you are a serious swimmer and your hotel pool is not that great or you had a sleep in so missed putting out the towels there is a public Olympic sized swimming pool opposite the Madison which is rarely used in the day. It has toilets, Snack Bar and a huge sunning area with numerous sun beds. The cost is 5 Euro and you could be in there from 10am to 11pm at night. The pool is very clean and is laned off for the serious swimmer. There is a small roped off area for the very young or non swimmers. You must wear a swim hat though, which they will provide as part of the entrance fee.
Restaurants La Rotunda Sul Mare which is recommended by various people. There are so many good restaurants that you are stuck for choice. Just go and try as many as you can.
Shops/ Market There is an open market on Saturday from around 7am to 3pm every Saturday about ½ k from the Madison. Usual market type stuff at market prices. A few fake items for sale but not many. In Cattolica there are numerous shops so try them out, they are usually open late and you can find some bargains if you are prepared to search them out.
The majority of hotels in Cattolica are three star with some four star hotels. There is only one five star and this is next door to Mc Donalds. The hotel staff seem to make a difference. Tour Reps try and sell you their tours by saying that Taxis are very expensive and that local buses do not go to the places that the trips go to and that you have to sign up on the information day or you will miss out.
Although the majority of people in this resort are families there is very little offered in terms of trips for the children. Yet there is so much for them to do. You can hire electric buggies at 20 Euros an hour to drive around the area. Quite a fun thing to do for an hour. Two hours will flatten the battery! Boat trips to various places can be booked at the Harbour/Marina in Gabbice Mare. Cocktails given the amount of alcohol at 4 Euros are cheap - Two of these and you are on your way to bed.
